ANTIBACTERIALS & YOUR HEALTH

According to Wikipedia "An Antimicrobial is a substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans. Antimicrobial drugs either kill microbes (microbicidal) or prevent the growth of microbes (microbistatic)."

Did you know? Consumers in the US & Canada spend nearly $1 billion each year on “Antibacterial” soaps and products - it's a huge and profitable market to say the least! People seem to be under the "Marketed/Advertised" impression that these products will "protect" their families from harmful "germs and illnesses". But in fact, these products contain chemicals that can not only harm our health but also the environment - not to mention that scientific studies have clearly and repeatedly shown that these products are no more effective than washing regularly with ordinary soap and water! CBC News stated: "A recent study of over 200 households found that people using antibacterial products didn't reduce their risk for contracting viral infections.

Did you know that up to 75% of liquid soaps, bar soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics, cleansing lotions, acne creams, and wipes contain Triclosan, not to mention it can also be found in items such as detergents, deodorants, antiperspirants, plastic food containers, mattresses, sponges, and the kicker - it can also be found in clothing and in children’s toys & nursery items! Consumers can check product ingredient lists for Triclosan, Triclocarban and Quaternary Ammonium Compounds. However, products with these chemicals AREN'T always required to list ingredients, and Triclosan can sometimes be referred to by a brand name, such as, "Microban".(http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/webextras/triclosan/what_is_triclosan.html?triclosan )

Triclosan or Triclocarban Chemicals have been creatively and succefully marketed to the public as an effective way to reduce the number of "bad bacteria" or "germs and viruses" that we are exposed to on a daily basis. There are many tactics that Marketers and Advertisers use to not only gain long-term "product loyalty" but to psychologically pull you in with an "emotional connection" in this case they are relying on "fear" as a motivating factor to get consumers to purchase these types of products. Sadly, I myself majored in Marketing/Advertising and as such I am fully aware of how these "tactics" work on the general consumer/public - we are taught to "sell" and taught the importance of "profit margins" - how they can be driven upwards by tactfully using various forms of "Marketing and Advertising strategies". However, in my minds eye - "profit should NEVER be put above health and safety" and sadly that seems to be the state of affairs in today's market place. Lack of testing, lack of quality and health control seem to run rampant. Even when the scientific studies and data are there - many companies and regulatory bodies seem to ignore the facts. There is a serious lack of laws and regulations to protect the publics health and safety! Why is it that the EU (European Union) has banned many chemicals, gmo's, pesticides, etc. yet here in the western half of the world such laws and regulations don't apply? The scientific evidence, the solid and factual studies are clearly there - so why are we still being used as guinea pigs? Is it really any wonder that diseases and environmentally caused illnesses are on the rise? When you look at the overwhelming evidence and facts it's really no wonder!

According to Parker Waichman - Injury Attorney's website: "Triclosan has already been banned or restricted in other countries, including the European Union. In the U.S., however, regulatory agencies have failed to act on this serious public health threat. In 2005, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that antimicrobial soaps and sanitizers DO NOT reduce the risk of illness and infection in the home, yet products made with triclosan remain on the market."

Why has it only been in the last few years that Triclosan and Triclocarban have come under public light in the media? With a constant flow of facts and studies that Triclosan interferes with normal development and function in humans and animals - why are these chemicals still on our store shelves? Unbelievably and ununderstandibly the The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given these chemicals their two thumbs up for over 30 years! It is not only the US but Canada as well that continues to "allow" such chemicals and substances to be allowed into our market place -
WHY?

Another good question is "why has our society become so germaphobic"? Why is it that people want to keep germs and viruses out of their lives so badly? Fear? What are people affraid of? Marketers and Advertisers have clearly done a great job! They have been successfully reaping the monetary profits for their so called "strategical achievements". The clear fact remains that most Doctors and Scientists agree that "germs and certain viruses" in fact help build a natural resistance to disease and leads to a healthier and stronger immune system in our bodies in the long-run.

Trying to create a sterile environment creates more problems to our health than the "germs and viruses" we are trying so desperately to eliminate. Not to mention the numerous "cleaning chemicals" people use in their homes trying to win this invisible battle pollutes the indoor air quality and contaminates our environment. It creates a myriad of other health issues including Asthma, Cancer, Hormone Disruption - the list goes on and on - Why? In an effort to keep "germs" at bay? It doesn't really make sense now does it - when you consider the flip side and health/environmental side effects of what you are actually doing.

The following is from http://www.nrdc.org/

"When tested in laboratory animals, Triclosan is known to interfere with "thyroid hormone" - a hormone critical for normal growth and brain development. Both Triclosan and Triclocarban also interfere with male and female sex hormones, which are necessary for normal growth and function of the reproductive system. One study in male rats reported that Triclosan decreased sperm count, damaged the male reproductive system, and disrupted male hormone production. Since humans have similar hormone systems as animals, these chemicals also may produce adverse effects in people."

"Triclosan is found in an alarmingly high percentage of Americans’ bodies. Approximately three-quarters of Americans ages 6 to over 65 have Triclosan in their urine. Triclosan has also been detected in human blood and breast milk. Preliminary studies found human blood levels of Triclocarban spike after using bar soaps containing the chemical."

As for environmental repercussions "Triclosan is one of the most frequently detected chemicals in streams across the U.S. It has even been found in the bodies of wild bottlenose dolphins Both Triclosan and Triclocarban are found at high concentrations in treated sewage sludge (also known as biosolids) that is often applied to agricultural fields as fertilizer. Because Triclosan has been shown to accumulate in earthworms living in these biosolid-treated fields, there are concerns about these chemicals also moving into plants and wildlife." as well "Triclosan can be transformed into highly toxic dioxin compounds under naturally occurring conditions in freshwater streams and rivers. Some dioxins are known human carcinogens and considered to be among the most toxic chemicals on earth."

*Personally the best thing we can do for ourselves and families is to turn the television off and take Advertising/Marketing for what it is. Take a good hard look at studies, standards, and information that can so easily be found on the internet these days. From solid articles, news reels, statistics, studies, as well as standards set by the European Union. Instead of sitting infront of the television being bombarded by profit driven companies, spend your time educating yourself and learning about the things we use, eat, drink, and wear everyday! There are so many resources out there, so much information. Take a look at some of my "favorite sites" to get you started. The best advice I can give is "question things", "research and educate yourself", clearly in today's world with the lack of laws and regulations we have to take ownership of our own health and not rely on others to keep us safe from harm!

Is your nursery/kids room safe from toxins?

There is nothing sweeter than a newborn sleeping peacefully in his/her crib. Babies and children alike are the most precious and perfect gifts a person can ask for. We as parents worry about their well being and safety even before they are born. We try and eat well, stay away from things and situations which we know/think may cause harm when we're pregnant yet despite our best efforts each and every child is born with more than 250 chemicals already present in their tiny bodies! The EWG (Environmental Working Group) has done studies on infant cord blood and the results are staggering to say the least. The detailed findings can be read here http://www.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden2/part8.php

Many expectant parents prepare for baby's arrival by decorating the baby's room. What if I told you that this may add more harm than good to your developing baby and would contribute to poorer indoor air quality for not only your baby's new lungs but for your whole family? What if I told you there are steps you can take to ensure that your baby and family have the best alternatives for infant care from day one? It's true, there are things you may not know and be aware of that can cause short/long term health effects to your baby and family as a whole! Things that most labels don't warn or tell you about. Are you ready to make your nursery a safer and healthier place to be? Just sit back and take a deep breath. In this blog I will be touching upon and discussing simple things that everyone can do to make their home a greener, safer and happier place to be!

I will start by mentioning that decorating, doing renovations, painting etc. While pregnant is never a good idea. There are so many toxic particles that can be breathed in by the mother that can harm the baby in eutero that it is not worth the risk! Any decorations with the exception of placing trinkets and clothes on the shelves and in the closet once renovations are done should be left to your spouse, family members, and friends.

The first thing most people think of when it comes to renovations and getting ready for the baby's room is paint. There are so many pretty colors for children's rooms that it can be hard to choose the perfect one. You can walk into any home decorating/renovating store and find isles and isles of sample colors, various brands and makes of paint - but what's really in that paint can? Do you know? Whether it's latex or acrylic, whether you can smell the off-gassing or not is it healthy or even safe to be using on our walls?

Whatever color(s) of paint you decide to use make sure that it is a No/Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint! You can take a look at the eartheasy website for great information on paints here:
http://www.eartheasy.com/live_nontoxic_paints.htm
A great choice is to choose alternative paints such as milk paints, or plant-based natural paints. They come in a vast array of colors and you can rest assured that they will not contribute to your indoor air pollution/toxicity. Your baby will be spending most of his/her time sleeping. With their undeveloped immune system and new lungs your infant will need a safe and as toxic free of an environment as you can provide.

As we talk about sleeping - do you know what our infants/children as well as we, are sleeping on/in? While mattresses 40-50 years ago were made mostly from untreated natural materials such as wool and cotton, these days the majority of mattresses and beds are made using a variety of petroleum based chemicals, foams, plastics and various forms of flame retardants including PBDE (Poly Brominated Diphenyl Ether) It is a suspected carcinogenic (cancer causing) that has been scientifically shown to accumulate inside humans. These chemicals off-gas and create a myriad of health problems, most have been linked to cancer, ashtma, autoimmune disorders, nervous system problems, hormone disruption the list goes on and on. Take a look at this article for some information on fire retardants and mattresses
http://www.myessentia.com/research/fire-retardants as well as http://www.myessentia.com/research/glues-toxic-components Some baby mattresses are even covered with plastics such as PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and release/off-gas harmfull phthalates take a look at EWG (Environmental Working Groups) website about Phthalates http://www.ewg.org/chemindex/term/480 Phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption, cancer, asthma and many more ailments in both children and adults!

So what is a parent to do? We need to purchase a mattress for our little one's to sleep on! Just as there is with everything out there - there are safer/healthier alternatives. Though a little pricey, organic mattresses are well worth the investment. Your child will be using the crib mattress for up to 4-5 years of age! My son used his mattress until he was almost 5! The natural lanolin in organic wool mattresses act as a natural fire retardant so there is no need for synthetic sprays of any kind to be added to the mattress. A child just as an adult, breathes deeper and heavier while asleep. This means that they are breathing in all the synthetic chemicals that conventional mattresses contain. Over the years some of these chemicals compound and accumulate in their bodies to create a toxic body burden which with some effort can be avoided.

Have you heard in the news over the last couple of years about children's garments and flame retardants? Did you know most of the pajamas sold in stores contain these chemicals. Not one of them mentions the use of these chemicals on their labels! If you are looking at synthetic fabrics most are manufactured with one type of flame retardant or another. Take a look at this great article on Flame retardants in pajamas
http://www.5minutesforgoinggreen.com/299/avoiding-flame-retardants-in-cozy-childrens-pajamas/ Again, what is a parent to do? You should always opt for snug, natural fiber pajamas. I personally avoid anything made from China, and opt for European made clothing. I buy organic snug sleepwear and have made sure by contacting the company that they do not contain any chemicals! Some sleepwear says "keep away from flame" on the tag - this is a great tell tale sign that the article of clothing has not been treated! Keep in mind that some countries have different standards for manufacturing clothing - and when in doubt call the company that makes the clothing and get answers. If you get the runaround, or "well look into it and get back to you" attitude then I would opt for another alternative!

Now that we've covered the paint and the mattress. Which seems to be in the forefront of most parents thoughts when expecting a child. How about the furniture and textiles? Did you know that particle board and pressed wood furniture is made with chemicals, including but not limited to formaldehyde - which off-gasses for the entire life of the product! When choosing furniture look for solid wood, with a natural oil finish. When you are looking at cribs - again make sure that there are no fiberboard, particle board pieces and that the wood finish is food grade. Your young child will be chewing on the guard rails once they get old enough to stand up and reach them!

Window blinds with strings should never be used in children's rooms! They are dangerous - each year there are needless deaths that occur due to strangulation that could have been prevented with a little foresight and some preventative measures! There are cordless blinds available on the market these days - take a look at the window covering safety council for more information
http://www.windowcoverings.org/basic_cord_safety.html If you are going to be using drapes instead - make sure you use natural fibers such as wool, cotton, linen. Some curtains are coated with stain treatments as well as flame retardants. Just as upholstered furniture, baby swings, playpens etc. contains toxic chemicals so do drapes - drapery fabrics can also be a source of toxic PFCs (Perfluorinated compounds) and PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ether) When you do find a natural fabric alternative, double check that they are not treated by following up with the manufacturer. If the fabric doesn't come in the color you would like - you can always use natural vegetable dyes to dye the fabric or use the dyes to add patterns and make your drapes unique! There are many safer alternatives out there, with a little digging and creativity you can make any nursery special and one of a kind!
Take a look at this article about non-toxic and eco-friendly curtains from care2.com
http://www.care2.com/greenliving/cool-curtains-non-toxic-and-eco-friendly.html

Flooring! What about flooring? I personally have hardwood flooring throughout the house. Why? Carpets contain many toxic chemicals that off-gas including but not limited to toluene, benzene, formaldehyde, ethyl benzene, styrene, acetone as well as an array of other chemicals that are scientifically known and suspected carcinogens! It contributes to indoor air pollution/toxicity! It's not only the off-gassing that's the problem - it is also the tiny synthetic fibers that get mixed into the air with every step we take and ultimately get into our/our baby's lungs and bloodstream. Take a look at this article on "Toxic Carpeting"
http://www.avianweb.com/toxiccarpeting.html

As you can see there are always ways to make healthier choices. The only thing we have to do is find out where these toxins are and then do a little digging/research to source alternatives to those items and avoid/eliminate them! Don't get discouraged or overwhelmed - just know that with a little effort you can avoid many of the routes of exposure and lower your family's toxic body burden by following simple steps and making easy switches as you prepare for your baby's arrival.

You should also look into EMF's (Electro Magnetic Fields) in your home. You can now purchase products to check the levels of exposure as well as lower these electrical fields in your baby's room as well as your home. Keep radios, lights, and all electrical devices as far away from your baby's crib as possible to reduce these fields from affecting your baby. (**Cordless phones, and cell phones are also EMF contributers in the home - regular plug in phones have less EMF's) I recently went to a lecture on EMF's by Dr. Magda Havas, BSc, PhD - she is the Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University. I myself have recently discovered just how important lowering the EMF's in our homes are. You can take a look at WEEP and learn about elector magnetic pollution here
http://www.weepinitiative.org/ you can also watch the video "The Truth About Wired & Wireless Technologies" By Doctor Havas here veoh2://veoh.com/?cmd=DA782A7C-3538-4dd9-B28B-90F927E31BF1

Make sure you have all Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors up to date and working. Install new batteries in each and everyone and test them all before you bring your baby home. These days most people seem to know about the importance of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide testers but what about the the second leading cause of cancer? After smoking the second leading cause is Radon exposure? Most people haven't even heard of Radon. Radon (According to Wikipedia Radon "is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium.") Take a look at Health Canada's site on Radon
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/environ/radon-eng.php and more information at http://www.toronto.ca/health/radon.htm#4 You should have your house tested for Radon. You can purchase a kit from most hardware stores for about $50. If you do have high levels of Radon there are many things you can do to block these gases - ask your local store or contact Health Canada for further details.

How about toys? One of the things that make shopping fun for parents - the cute stuffed animals, the squeaky rubber ducks, and the endless number of musical toys on the store shelves. Marketing and Advertising at it's best, everything and anything imaginable to make new parents buy, buy buy! A little while ago I wrote an article on safer children's toys labeled "It's not just "Lead" that's hiding in your children's toys!" You can find the article here
http://eco-enviro-girl.blogspot.com/2009/12/its-not-just-lead-thats-hiding-in-your.html There are so many chemicals and routes of exposure for kids. From formaldehyde in clothing and bath products to lead and cadmium in toys. You can take a look at a past article I wrote about "our children and their future" which talks about chemical cleaners in our homes and the health repercussions for our children http://eco-enviro-girl.blogspot.com/2009/07/our-children-their-future.html

I am a pregnant Mom myself and have been doing a lot of research sourcing items for our nursery. I have personally equipped my baby's room with wooden furniture, including a wooden rocking chair - which I have personally sewn an organic cotton and wool seating for. I have purchased Organic clothing, an organic mattress, some "Under the nile"
http://www.underthenile.com/underthenile/index.php baby toys and have an untreated wood blind as a window covering in the room as well as on all the windows in our home. We have hard wood throughout the house and a few 100% cotton rugs here and there for accent. I clean with Vinegar and baking Soda, I do my laundry with soap nuts, freshen our air with organic lavender, and open the windows as much as possible - even in winter to let fresh air circulate in our home. I have tested all the home detectors and have made sure that EMF's are in check. It may seem like a lot of work but it really isn't. In fact, all I did was carefully watch the purchases we made and did a little research before investing in nursery and home pieces.

I happen to live Ontario Canada and as such have sourced the following nursery alternatives for my home - take a look at some of the wonderful websites that I have found for safer/healthier baby and home products:

6 Important Videos From The EWG you NEED to see...

Most of us have a general concept of what Health & Safety is/entails. We as parents are responsible for our children and as such we do everything we can to make sure our children have the best possible foods, products, and upbringing. We sometimes worry about our children getting enough exercise, not enough fruits and vegetables, and try to make sure that they are keeping up with proper hygene. What if what we thought was "Healthy" and "Safe" just wasn't? What if there were important pieces to the puzzle that we just weren't given or told about? What if everything we've done as parents hasn't been enough to safeguard our childrens health and future? You would want to know about it - you would want to do something about it!

The EWG (Environmental Working Group) team consists of Scientists, Engineers, Policy Experts, Lawyers and Computer Programmers who dig through Government Data, Legal Documents, Scientific Studies and uses their own Laboratory Tests to expose threats to you and your family's health as well as the environment. They help find solutions. Their tireless research brings to light unsettling facts that you have a right to know. Awareness is the first step towards change, towards a healthier and safer future for our children and ourselves.

I think that the following two - three part videos are something that will enlighten and open many doors for parents as well as individuals who may/may not be aware of what environmental body burdens exist in our society today. Where they come from and what one can do to prevent/decrease such burdens on a day to day basis.

GMO's - What are you eating?

These days the word about GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) is slowly spreading in the media - more and more people are becoming enlightened/aware of the lack of research and lack of studies when it comes to the health effects of gmo's on the public! The topic of GMO's can now be heard in News Articles/Reels, Magazines, Online/Offline and are sometimes mentioned and briefly talked about on Radio Shows/Programs. I myself have overheard the topic discussed over a cup of coffee in a restaurant.

GMO's are one of many issues concerning our health & wellness as well as our planets future! It is definitely a topic that more people should be understanding, researching and questioning - since it has unknowingly become a part of our daily lives. It seems that the US & Canada along with some other countries have been using it's people as a mass experiment one which people were not even made aware of! Do you know when they started genetically modifying your food/materials/products? What foods/materials are genetically modified? What countries allow GMO's? If you have never heard of GMO's then you have just proven my point, if you don't know when it began, or in what foods GMO's can be found then you are like most of the general public - left in the dark, but why is that? Our food has changed drastically over the last 50-60 years and what you thought you were eating might not be as "safe", "healthy" or "nutritious" as you may think! The assumption that "studies" have been done, that "laws & regulations" are in place is just not the case! Especially when most of the laws and regulations were created decades before most of the chemicals, additives, GMO's etc. were even introduced into our food & products! If they are "safe" in one country then how can other countries say that they are not? Who stands to gain the most profit and what country are they? (interesting fact: GMO's were created in the US and as such the US & Canada both allow GMO's in their food)

Don't get me wrong I think Technology can be a wonderful thing "IF" used properly! With proper "long term" testing/research and NOT by the Government and their affiliates who to me seem to have their own agendas! I think these days being "reactive" rather than "pro-active" seems to be the sad state of affairs where money is involved. As far as GMO's are concerned the EU (European Union) has banned GMO's!! They know that there is NO solid long term testing and that the testing that has been done isn't sound enough and safe enough to endanger the European people yet Canada & US continue to genetically modify their foods! "If" Gmo's were harmless then why aren't thing labeled as GMO on products and foods - many natural food groups, Scientist, Doctors, Health Agencies etc. have gone head to head with the Government and have battled to have things containing GMO's labeled, yet they have been refused!! - why? Most people haven't even heard of GMO's! Shouldn't people be made aware of it and have a choice whether they consume/use such items? Interesting isn't it?

Europe also has higher standards for chemicals and additives! RBGH (Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) has been proven to cause harm in humans and Europe banned them as well as Canada but the US still administers it to their animals! So even if you live in Canada - now the question you have to ask yourself is - where are your meats & dairy products coming from? It's one thing for them to ban the "use" of RBGH in Canada and it's another to "import" meat and dairy from the US....!! (Loopholes can be found anywhere and companies always find them) "While it is used in the United States (though not without reaction), it is 100% banned in Canada, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand. In Canada, bulk milk products from the United States that have been produced with rbST are still allowed to be sold and used in food manufacture" (Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_somatotropin )

It seems that in the 21st Century we find ourselves in the midst of such a consumer driven and result oriented society that companies are rushing to be the first in line to make things faster, cheaper, stronger & sometimes "Profit Margins" seem to overshadow health and long term global responsibility. Profit should NEVER be put before our Health & Wellness nor the stability and sustainability of our planet! These days our life expectancy has almost doubled but the "quality" of life in terms of health has declined! Diabetes, Cancer, Leukemia, Asthma, ADD, ADHD, Autism the list goes on and on - the rise is not just in adults but has also been reported in staggering and increasing numbers in our children!!! Everything from Genetically Modified Foods, to the air we breathe! The lack of fore site, laws/regulations are the tip of the iceberg. We know why Companies & the Government are remaining silent but why are the people - the general public? Is it lack of awareness? Trust in the Companies & Government to regulate and keep us safe? At this point I would like to believe that it's just that simple - that people lack the knowledge and not that people don't care - after all we are talking about ourselves, our children and future generations to come. Consider this: GMO crops intermingle with naturally occurring/growing vegetation and wildlife. Seeds will blow, bees and other insects will pollinate, animals feed on vegetation and again spread these seeds with their manure - the natural world as we know it is at risk of cross-contamination on a global scale. GMO fish being released into the wild breeding with natural/wild fish in the rivers, lakes, oceans.... In 50 years what will we consider "natural"? Why are we letting it happen when we don't know the long term health/global repercussions?

I have researched many articles and have talked with quite a few people about this subject and have listed a few sites below to get you started about GMO's. The following are a few of my favorite links. Do your own research from reputable and solid sources, contact the EU and ask why they have banned GMO's - dig for information, ask questions! Education and awareness about the world around us is important in all we do especially when it involves/effects us, our children, and future generations to come. If we close our eyes, or refuse to "believe" sound research and studies the problem will not go away - infact that is what the general public has done for the past 50-60 years and look at where we are: Illnesses increasing in children as well as adults, toxic overload/body burden, environmental pollution, the list goes on and on... All because we didn't question things, we as people didn't research, study, or make a stand! Ignorance and a lackadaisical attitude has dug us and our family's a hole that finally but slowly the media is shedding light on in small tid-bits here and there... Some people are sadly looking at the "Green", "Natural", "Toxic-Free", "Enviro" movement as a "fad"! Calling it a "fad" is an easy and frankly lazy way out. The "Green mindset", "Lifestyle" change - it's long overdue it is a change that all living things on this planet need and deserve! It's a change that kicks the pharma/chem companies and labs in the derriere and opens a flood gate of awareness to the general public. While the information is still just trickling down the mainstream the information is out there - you are reading this article on the Internet and as such you have an invaluable tool which enables endless number of resources to be available at your fingertips - all one has to do is "want to" look and understand...

Forget the color red for Valentine's Day think GREEN!

"Cactus's are Green and the Sky is Blue, I got this little Eco Gift - just for you!" ~eco_enviro_girl

Who said Valentine's Day has to be about Chocolate, Roses and Stuffed Toys? Sure it's classic, but it's also redundant, wasteful and not at all creative or personal. So why not make this Valentine's Day something to remember?

Creativity goes along way... Personally, I think that the show of affection which symbolizes Valentine's Day should be an ongoing experience throughout the year! We should always show love and appreciation for the wonderful people in our lives! It doesn't take a lot of money, it also doesn't mean we should create waste and more items that ultimately end up in our land fills. I think it's very hypocritical to pollute our planet and future with more consumerism when what we are saying with the gift is "I love you", the reminder of the love we share for one another, love of everything and everyone, respect for our loved one's and their future... So I created this little blog to inspire, and to perhaps give you ideas of alternative gift giving ideas you could try this Valentine's Day as well as throughout the year for a little added romance...

GREEN IDEAS FOR ROMANCE & LOVE

CANDLELIGHT PICNIC FOR TWO...

Why not get some Organic Strawberries and a bottle of Local Organic Wine and set up a romantic picnic for two in the bedroom? Perhaps you could buy some beeswax tea light candles and set a romantic mood... And maybe after the bottle is emptied you could play "spin the bottle" and make up new rules to the game?

CANDLELIT BATH FOR TWO... "Rub-a-dub-dub there's some organic stuff in the tub..."

Forget sitting in a chemical bath with your mate, why not try adding some Epsom salt, some essential oils and some beeswax candles to set the mood? You could make some organic Lavender and Chamomile sachets and use them like teabags in the tub.... If you don't have Lavender or Chamomile, why not try Organic Peppermint teabags instead (make sure to remove the teabags before your honey comes into the tub - it's not very romantic to have teabags floating around as you cuddle, and the great thing is teabags are compostable!)

MASSAGE-A-DEUX

There's nothing like getting a massage! What's even better is getting one by a lover... You can use Organic Massage oils or be even more Green by using organic olive oil and a few drops of organic essential oils instead. Take time to pamper one another... Play some soft, relaxing music, light some beeswax candles and enjoy... And remember you can always follow up this great idea with the bath for two, or precede it with the romantic picnic mentioned above...

LOVE LETTERS

This is something you can do anytime of the year just to say "I love you"... Leave little letters (on scrap pieces of paper - recycle) in pockets, briefcases, car seats, glove box, shoes, etc... The sky is the limit!

GREEN IDEAS FOR FRIENDS & FAMILY

xoxoxo BREAKFAST HUGS & KISSES xoxoxo

Ah, this one is great for family or friends! It's easy and it's sure to get some smiles! Invite friends and family for breakfast and serve up some X's & O's you can make toast into O's, Bacon into X's, Pancakes into hearts.... Get creative! You can use fruits, veggies, nuts, anything you like... This is the perfect start to any Valentine's Day - some great conversation, lots of love and plenty of hugs and kisses for everyone! ;~)

I LOVE YOU LUNCHES-BUNCHES!

One of my favorites for my young son, I have small heart shaped cookie cutters and cut his lunch into heart shapes. You can go as simple or as creative as you like here... I have cut cheese into mini heart bites, made an organic peanut butter sandwich into a heart... I have even made my husband a sandwich and cut a small heart out of the top of the bread and inserted the same sized cut out heart shape made with a radish! When he saw the sandwich at work he told me he laughed and it reminded him of how special I was and how he felt lucky to have someone like me...

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

There's nothing like cooking with fresh herbs! There are so many heirloom varieties to choose from these days and they are all delicious and eco-friendly! This year my young son and I are painting some pots we bought at a second hand store and filling them with herbs for my parents. Kids love to get involved and these make a beautiful one of a kind gift that is sure to bring a smile to any grandparents face....

CHARITY

Love makes the world-go-round... Holiday's are not so much about getting as they are about giving... So why not help out a less fortunate child in another country? Or give to a local charity, like abused women's shelters, the humane society, or a children's hospital. Perhaps volunteer some time with a loved one and go to a soup kitchen or event that can use a hand... You will appreciate each other more and realize that material things don't really matter when you have good company and the love of one another!

REUSE & RECYCLE

You can reuse virtually anything with a little imagination ;~) You can create anything from sock puppets to wall art to jewellery to.... You get the idea.... During the year I keep a recycling bin full of craft material, I toss in things I know we could use for arts and crafts... You can make one of a kind handmade gifts that your family and friends are sure to love! A few years back I made some puppets from old sweater arms, some buttons, and some old shoe laces that broke.... We had a blast and my friends son loved it! He carried the puppet everywhere!

TEA PARTY

Why not have a tea party? Invite friends and family, make several new flavors of organic tea, and have a taste test... You could talk about funny family stories, talk about relatives that may live further away, reminisce about all the wonderful times and memories you've spent together over the years... What a perfect Valentine's Day.... Remembering the love, joy, and sharing laughter - nothing brings family's closer together than a wonderful family gathering....

These were just a few of my ideas.... I have many, many more.... I hope I have managed to inspire you, give you an idea or two... From our family to yours - we wish you and your loved one's a special and memorable Valentine's Day..... EVERYDAY!!

Canned foods/drinks BPA and life in the 21st Century

Have you heard about BPA in canned foods? Most people are aware of BPA leaching out of plastics, and there was a big stink made about BPA in baby bottles on the news but how about canned foods & drinks? If they know that BPA is toxic why is it still out there, on the shelves, contaminating our food? Did you know that BPA is present in Food Processors, Juicers and Blenders and can be found in an ordinary receipt... There are many sources for BPA exposure! The list is long...

There are so many contaminants, chemicals, toxins in our water, food, products, clothing, furniture, even air that it's hard to keep track of them all and even harder to protect your family and loved ones these days. It's more important than ever to educate one's self and try to avoid as many toxins as possible to lower our/our family's risks (lower body burden) of being a statistic for any of the growing number of cancer, diabetes, leukemia, asthma etc. casualties of the 21st century! It is important to remember that we do have choices! We just need to know where the problems lie and what alternatives are available! Unfortunately this takes time and research on our parts - and time is something which many people can't seem to find these days. "Everything has chemicals in it", "everything is bad for you in one way or another". I contribute this kind of "attitude" and "mindset" to why things are the way that they are today... The chemical revolution happened slowly and it seems that many people just became "used to it". Why? I honestly don't know - because I have never had that mindset, perhaps it's easier to say those things than to research or study the topic. Perhaps it's scary to think about how many chemicals we are exposed to and the fact that we are responsible for allowing it into our home and lives. Ignorance is not bliss, it has created the society we live in! If we didn't allow it from the beginning, if we had asked more questions, demanded more testing and research, if we had pushed for tougher laws, rules and regulations would we really be where we are right now? We can't go back and change how things have "evolved" (I use this term lightly) but we CAN change how things move forward, we can change/adjust our own life/lifestyle and send a message! Instead of the "nonchalant passive attitude" why not start questioning things and avoiding toxins as a whole. Lowering our family's body burden by eliminating as many points of exposure as we can and lowering our risks to certain diseases just seems like the logical thing to do, doesn't it ?! Then why isn't everyone doing it?

What I along with many Doctors, Scientists, Health Advocates can't seem to understand is the mind set that Health Departments and various organizations seem to have regarding the "safe levels" of exposure to certain chemicals. While they may be right about certain "single/individual chemicals" in low/single doses and that they "seem" to pose no threat they fail to mention the accumulative effects as well as the fact that many chemicals are not studied properly or for prolonged periods of time. In fact most chemicals on the market today aren't studied at all. Nor are the infinite combinations of chemical exposures we all face in any given day! They also do not mention that it is not one chemical or one source that you are exposed to on a daily basis. We are exposed to chemicals in the air, the water, our pesticide laden, GMO foods, BPA is in the canned food, canned drinks, plastic containers, receipts, Formaldehyde is in clothing, toys, and furniture. Dioxin in foods and products. Lead and other heavy metals in the air, in our water and in our food supply, even our children's toys. Fire Retardants on clothing, mattresses, computers, electronics.... The list of chemical exposures goes on and on! Just think of what you have exposed yourself to by the end of a day! Now also think about how many of those could have been avoided with a little research and alternative steps and products! Because most of the toxins could have been avoided!

You just can't accurately study the infinite combinations of chemical exposure because everyone leads a different lifestyle and therefore is exposed to different chemical levels and combinations! Nor can you tell what these different combinations of chemicals do short or long term in adults/children or developing fetuses they have not been studied sufficiently! The only thing they can study is groups of people and the accumulation in their blood stream and body. Which while giving you a picture of how bad our chemical body burden has gotten over the years doesn't accurately capture our society and what we are doing to not only ourselves but also our children and future generations! Just take a look at the 2005 study spearheaded by the EWG (Environmental Working Group) in collaboration with Commonweal about the body burden of newborns - who found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood! http://www.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden2/execsumm.php also take a look at their body burden executive summary here: http://archive.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden1/es.php

So the "safe limits" of one canned food may not mean much, if you're combining it with bath and beauty products, fluoride toothpaste, formaldehyde laden clothing, fire retardant mattresses, pesticide laden foods etc. throughout the day, throughout the month, the years... Is it any wonder that diseases like Asthma, Diabetes, Cancer, etc. are on the rise? Now I'm no Scientist nor am I a Doctor but it doesn't take a PHD to know that there are too many chemical combinations and level combinations to deem any of these chemicals safe for human exposure or consumption! Why do we need so many chemicals on the market? Why aren't there stricter rules and regulations? How are we supposed to keep ourselves healthy and proactively reduce our exposure to these toxic chemicals? Why are known and suspected carcinogens, pathogens and toxins still out there? And why aren't people more aware of them and doing something about it? Education and awareness seem to be sadly lacking in the general public these days. Those of us who do research and realize the perils have taken it upon ourselves to not only protect our family's and friends but try to spread awareness and make our voices heard to change the state of affairs in today's marketplace!

There are so many chemicals out there - when it comes to BPA you might be asking yourself - What is BPA anyway, and how is it harmful? "Bisphenol A" is an endocrine disruptor which can mimic the body's own hormones and may lead to negative health effects, "It has been suspected as being hazardous to humans since the 1930's". Studies have linked it to obesity, neurological issues, disruption of the dopaminergic system, thyroid function, increased breast cancer risk, and has been linked to neuroblastoma, prostate cancer, sexual and reproductive problems. According to Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A

EWG: "Independent laboratory tests found a toxic food-can lining ingredient associated with birth defects of the male and female reproductive systems in over half of 97 cans of name-brand fruit, vegetables, soda, and other commonly eaten canned goods." http://www.ewg.org/reports/bisphenola

Toxic Nation reports "Testing by Health Canada has revealed that 96% of canned drinks contain BPA. The survey covered over 84% of canned soft drinks sold in Canada, including non carbonated, carbonated, non-diet, diet, fruit flavored and energy drinks." http://toxicnation.ca/bpaqa

Toxic Nation Fact Sheet: Seeking Safer Packaging: Ranking Packaged Food Companies on Bisphenol A (BPA) http://toxicnation.ca/RankingPackagedFoodCompaniesonBisphenolA

The Globe and Mail and CTV have found high levels of the estrogen-mimicking chemical in canned food sold in Canada.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/article687664.ece

BPA - "They should be concerning for every Canadian, not just because of the implications for their kids but also what it means for adult Canadians," Smith said. "It turns out that we are marinating in this chemical." CTV News

So what is one to do? My opinion is to research and educate yourself! Arm yourself with solid information and knowledge and try and find healthier alternatives! Do not eat canned food, boxed food or premade foods. Steer away from "fast food" and "convenience foods"! Try instead to get back to basics, "slow food", the way food was originally prepared - the way our Grand Parents and Great Grandparents cooked! Eat organic whenever possible - that's how food was meant to be - NATURAL - before the chemical revolution began, before things went horribly astray! And keep in mind that labels don't list everything! Not on foods, products or clothing! Have you seen "BPA" on the label of cans and kitchen appliances? Have you seen a shirt tag or mattress say "laced with Fire Retardant, Formaldehyde," or food labels listing "Pesticide" as an ingredient? How about bath and beauty products listing "Formaldehyde" or "Dioxin" as an ingredient or letting you know that "Parabens" have been linked to Breast Cancer? Labels also hide things under umbrellas such as "Fragrance", "Food Coloring" or "Artificial Flavors" - for example a single "Artificial Strawberry Flavor" contains 49 ingredients, most of which are difficult to read/pronounce chemical compounds! But you won't find any of these on labels! What about the items that are listed on labels - do you understand what all those chemicals/additives are, or what the consequences of consuming/absorbing such chemicals might be? You can't just assume that because it's on the shelf it's "safe", that again ties into the lackadaisical attitude I was mentioning before. We should try to be "Proactive" rather than waiting for something to happen and be "Reactive". Sometimes being "Reactive" doesn't help - such is the case for various forms of cancer! Hindsight is 20/20! But if you look ahead you CAN prevent/lower the risk of many situations that could arise! So why put yourself at greater risk when you have alternatives? the more you know the healthier you and your family will be, lower your risks of diseases and the better/safer our children and future generations will be! Education is key!!

Why you should wash clothes before wearing them?

To some this is just something they've always done automatically, to others, well... I'm not quite sure why others don't launder their clothes before they wear them for the first time. Perhaps they think that if it's "new" it's been laundered. Or maybe they think that "new clothing" smell means that the item is "fresh" and ready for wear. Are you one of the people who do not feel the need to launder their clothes once you get them home? If so, you might want to rethink your practices. Why? Are you ready to know what's actually on your clothes? Yes, we're talking about the clothes with the tags attached, the underwear's in packages, the socks that come neatly folded in plastic bags sealed with a security seal.

You know that "new clothing smell" on clothing? The new underwear and socks? Ever wonder what they are? They're packaged in plastic and some people assume it's just the off-gassing smell of the plastic. But it's not, that smell is actually a mixture of chemicals, for example formaldehyde and urea resin. These chemicals are actually used to "finish" fabrics. Why? To keep clothes stain resistant, mercerizing, keeping them from getting wrinkled, to retard mildew growth, and sometimes for disinfecting. Most contain VOC's (volatile organic compounds) which like formaldehyde have been classified as a human carcinogen (cancer causing agent) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and is also an allergen. Unwashed clothes can not only cause rashes if you have sensitive skin but continued exposure to carcinogens (and we are surrounded by them - carcinogens from the materials in our home, furniture, clothing, to some of the products we use and consume) increase your chances of getting various forms of cancer.

If the chemical residues didn't put a knott in your stomach then how about the vast array of organisms, bacteria, bodily secretions, etc. that are left behind from the numerous people trying on the clothes , perhaps someone has already taken them home and returned it before you decided to buy it! You should always try and keep in mind that you are not the first person to try on these clothes. Even underwear and bras at lingerie stores get tried on. Hygiene isn't high on everyone's priority list and as such after Good Morning America bought various items of clothing from 3 major department stores the results were shocking to say the least! http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/gma-found-clothes-clean/story?id=9482373 They found everything from fecal matter to yeast, to vaginal discharge on clothing.

Dr. Philip Tierno Director of Clinical Microbiology at New York University Langone Medical Center says some pathogens are more easily transmitted than others. For example the "Norovirus" which causes gastrointestinal illness "can live for several days on clothing" as well the staph bacteria MRSA can live on cotton clothing for six months! While the risks of germs from clothing making you sick are low, you can make them lower by washing them before wearing.

Just think, some people sneeze on the clothes, don't wash their hands after using the restroom and touch clothing in stores. There are people who pick thier nose, who don't wear underwear (and try on underwear or pants), lactating mothers who try on bras, the list goes on and on. So take your pick, is it the chemical residues or the infinite combinations of germs and organisms that reside in those "new clothes" that will now make you want to wash the clothes you bring home. I have personally always washed the clothes I bought before wearing them or giving them to my family. I also use vinegar in a spray bottle to wipe off toys and books before giving it to my child or placing items on my shelf at home. I don't mind germs but when you're talking about fecal matter.... You understand where I'm coming from right?

Below are a few sites I came across about the subject. It was actually on the news not too long ago and it got my friends and I talking. We all agreed that washing before wearing was essential and it's something everyone should be made aware of!
